Like half of all data scientists, I started out in academia – completing a PhD in Particle Physics with the LHCb experiment at CERN. After that I got my first real commercial exposure working at Tesco where I was lucky enough to learn from some of the best in the business under Dave Lewis about the importance of the customer.
My main passion is solving new problems – I like working on things that are challenging, or don’t have a pre-determined outcome. I also am keen on delivering value and improving businesses – data science is the perfect meeting ground for these two interests.
I grew up in the beginning of the mass uptake of technology by people, and this technological revolution was an eye-opening experience. The next technological revolution, the use of new techniques, new data sets, or new perspectives (and any combination of!) to solve problems to allow businesses to (often for the first time – sometimes more accurately) predict the future, is another game-changer.
